Information in one place.
Bring updates and records into a shared view, so everyone knows where to look.
Systems for people
Clearer operations for businesses that care about how work feels.
Explore BackroomThe premise
Backroom helps established small and medium businesses improve how work happens, through clearer processes, connected software and practical digital tools.
We look at how information and work move between people and software, then decide where a clearer process or thoughtful automation would help.
A practical method
Spend time with the people behind the process. Understand the routines, handovers and exceptions that shape their day.
Find the repeated tasks, missed handovers and information that's hard to find. Agree on what to tackle first.
Introduce the changes with clear guidance and time to learn. Give the team what they need to use and maintain them.
In the everyday
A delayed job, order or production handover. Information entered twice. Stock or supplier details passed through messages. A report that takes too long. These are the kinds of things we look for.
Bring updates and records into a shared view, so everyone knows where to look.
Connect the tools you already use and reduce repetitive administration.
Build training and induction processes that give people a clear place to start.
Create useful dashboards and reports that show what needs attention.
Services
Not every problem needs new software. Sometimes the answer is a clearer process, a better use of existing software, or simply removing a step that no longer serves a purpose.
We recommend what genuinely improves the business and the working lives of the people in it. Nothing more than it needs.
Understand what needs to change.
We spend time with the people and processes behind the work, identify friction and recommend practical next steps.
Make the improvement real.
We design, build and introduce the agreed solution. It might be a clearer process, connected software or a simple custom tool.
Keep it useful as the business changes.
Ongoing support, refinement and small improvements so the system continues to serve the people using it.
From experience
Tom
Founder, Backroom.
Backroom grew out of years inside a busy Australian business with more than 150 people. My work has spanned the tools, project management and the systems that connect them.
I've seen how much of a day can disappear into things that shouldn't be difficult. Chasing an update. Entering information twice. Finding the right document. Working around software that was meant to help.
Building internal systems brought those experiences together. A process can look sensible on paper and still get in someone's way. To understand why, you have to spend time with the people using it.
That's the starting point for Backroom. I bring an inside understanding of the work, ask where things get stuck, and help the team find a practical way forward.
Tell me what's making work harder than it needs to be. We'll start there.
